Migodi ya Usawa is a project funded by the Amplify Change fund. Launched in 2023, “Migodi ya Usawa” aims to address the comprehensive prevention and response to gender-based violence and sexual reproductive health among women and girls in the gold supply chains of Ikolomani and Shinyalu in Kakamega. The projects’ interventions are centered on changing attitudes, behavior, and values transforming social norms., increasing the number of marginalized groups informed on SRHR and GBV as a human rights issue, and empowering youth and women small-scale miners to advocate for their socio-economic rights and prevent exploitations and abuse within the mining sites.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS MADE SINCE PROJECT INCEPTION
- The project enabled the training of 30 GBV/SRHR Champions from Ikolomani and Shinyalu on GBV, access to SRHR services, and GBV case reporting and response. The trained champions organize community outreaches on GBV referral pathways and SRHR education along different gold mining sites.
The project trained 30 group leaders of women and youth artisanal small-scale miners intending to increase their involvement in leadership and decision-making in the gold supply chains and their advocacy for SRHR and GBV response as a human right, mainstreaming Gender in the gold supply chains.
The projects organize teen mothers’ support groups in partnership with 8 health facilities. The groups which have a membership of 100 teen mothers each meet monthly for SRHR talks, family planning, child care, and economic skills.
Engaged 50 men as allies who are currently organizing coffee sessions with men and boys in different gold mining sites to sensitize on transforming norms and attitudes that limit access to SRHR for women and girls and rally men towards preventing GBV. The sessions also call men to report and seek support in case their rights end up being violated.
Organized a successful mobile legal aid camp providing community living along the gold supply chain to access SRHR services, STI/ HIV testing, GBV and TB screening, and psychosocial services.
Currently, the project works with 100 groups of youth and women organizing in clusters to support them in diversifying socio-economic empowerment and opportunities, transitioning into economic hubs.
