Mazingira Bora Phase 2 Project which is funded by Shack Dwellers International Kenya, works to address the ecological injustices emanating from the gold mining activities, mitigating deforestations and addressing landslides occurrences in Ikolomani Subcounty through ecosystem restoration and rehabilitations of gold mining sites.
GOAL
Rehabilitating the neglected gold mining sites and ecosystem restoration in Ikolomani Kenya.
OBJECTIVES
- Conduct community workshops, dialogues and climate change community screenings to community champions, artisanal miners and local communities on sustainable mining techniques, land reclamation, water management, and climate-smart agricultural practices to enhance their capacity to implement environmentally responsible approaches.
- Increase awareness among stakeholders, including mining companies, government agencies, and local communities, about the climate change impacts of gold mining in Ikolomani and the importance of adopting sustainable practices.
- Increased adoption of sustainable mining practices by encouraging a significant number of gold mining companies in Ikolomani to adopt sustainable practices, resulting in reduced deforestation, improved land reclamation, decreased water pollution, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
- Improved community resilience and livelihoods: Empower local communities through capacity building initiatives, leading to the adoption of sustainable livelihoods beyond mining, enhanced climate resilience, and diversified income sources.
- Strengthened regulatory frameworks: Contribute to the development and implementation of strengthened environmental regulations and enforcement mechanisms that prioritize sustainable mining practices and mitigate the environmental impacts of gold mining in Ikolomani.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
- Reduced Deforestation: We anticipate a decrease in deforestation rates due to the implementation of sustainable mining practices and reforestation efforts.
- Improved Water Quality: We expect a reduction in water pollution levels, leading to healthier aquatic ecosystems and safer water sources for communities.
- Decreased Greenhouse Gas Emissions: We aim to lower greenhouse gas emissions from mining activities through the adoption of cleaner technologies and energy-efficient practices.
- Enhanced Land Restoration: We anticipate improvements in land quality and soil health through reclamation projects and the implementation of sustainable land management practices.
- Increased Community Resilience: We expect to see communities become more resilient to the impacts of climate change through the implementation of adaptation strategies and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture.
