A Glimpse Into Mazingira Bora Project

The name “Mazingira Bora” translates to “Better Environment,” and the project lives up to this promise by embracing a holistic approach. KEY MILESTONES ACHIEVED BY MAZINGIRA BORA PROJECT

  • The project trained 50 environmental champions drawn across mining sites and who engaged local administration and stakeholders in designing agreements and interventions to existing ecological exploitations in the gold mines.

It has spearheaded the formation and capacity strengthening of the community consultative committee which provides oversight of mining activities, setting guidelines that protect the land and environment and community wellbeing.

The project supported the initiative on land rehabilitation and backfilling of open shafts in the mining resulting in the backfilling of 30 open shafts and the planting of trees in the neglected gold mining sites.

The project directly engaged 1500 youth and women within the gold mines in capacity-building programs increasing their participation in ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation of gold mines.

The project partnered with the county government to establish environmental clubs in public learning institutions. The clubs took the lead in planting and growing 2000 trees in the institution’s grounds increasing tree cover in the region.
